While most of the world’s population speaks some English today, a small portion can hold a full-fledged conversation in English. This is particularly true of the European continent. One very common misconception is that Europeans are good at speaking English. This is not true, however. While some countries excel at speaking English, especially in Northern Europe, other European countries do not fair well as far as English proficiency is concerned. In fact, most people in Southern Europe cannot hold a conversation in English. This is shown in the following map, designed by Jakub Marian. Data incorporated in the map is based on 2012 Eurobarometer report.

 English is the most widely spoken language in the world. The majority of English speakers in the world today speak it as a second language. This begs the following question: where are the world’s best non-native English speakers? A recent report released by EF Education First has an answer. This report lists all countries, excluding those in which English is spoken as a first language, and how they rank in English proficiency.

We’ve all had our issues with learning English or any language for that matter. This is because there are some aspects that are just hard to learn or deal with. The maddening things in learning English are a lot. But without a doubt, the spelling/pronunciation inconsistency stands out to be the most salient.
